The Seller's Side of Residential Settlement

A review of how attorney and non-attorney settlement agents may represent or assist sellers, including deed referrals, UPL, professional ethics and guarding against fraudulent transactions. Learn how to:
· Recognize the limits of what a non-attorney settlement agent may do to assist a seller.
·  Review the UPL rules that affect those working with sellers in a residential settlement.
·  Review the ethical rules governing the seller’s side of a residential settlement.
·  Understand the roles of an attorney and non-attorney in the seller’s side of settlement.
 
 
About the Speaker
 
Kay Creasman is an Assistant Vice President and Counsel in Virginia for Old Republic National Title Insurance Company. Working for Old Republic allows her to work with title and settlement agents to find practical answers to questions, to find reasonable ways to insure problems that might otherwise prevent timely settlement.
 
She received a J.D. from the University of Richmond, a M.Ed. from Tulane University, and a B.S. from Athens College. Kay has, at various times since 1976, maintained a private law practice in the Richmond area focusing on real estate, small business matters, and wills; owned and operated a high volume title insurance and non-attorney settlement agency in the Richmond area; been employed by other national underwriters as counsel in Virginia and West Virginia; searched title in the record rooms; spoken at numerous seminars on real estate and title insurance, and taught law classes to business majors at the graduate college level for 21 years.
 
An active member of the Virginia Land Title Association (VLTA) since 1994 she served four years on the Board of Directors, including as President (2003-2004); as a member of the Education Committee of VLTA (1994-2009), including chairperson; and as a member of the Legislative Committed (1997-current), including chairperson (2008-2010). She is committed to enhancing the professionalism of the industry.
